A new device described in Matter aims to change the ways health data is processed. Researchers from the US have developed a flexible, stretchable computing chip that mimics the human brain for processing information. Dr. Sihong Wang, Materials Scientist, Assistant Professor of Molecular Engineering at the University of Chicago, stated that the device was designed to bridge the gap between artificial intelligence and machine learning to create a powerful device that can analyze health data right on bodies.

In the future, people′s health status can be tracked continuously by wearable electronics that can detect diseases even before symptoms appear, added Dr. Wang. The research team designed a chip that can collect data from multiple biosensors and draw conclusions about a person′s health using cutting-edge machine learning approaches. Importantly, they wanted it to be wearable on the body and integrate seamlessly with the skin. Hence, they assembled polymers into a device that allowed the artificial intelligence-based analysis of health data. Rather than working like a typical computer, the chip, which is called a neuromorphic computing chip, functions more like a human brain that can both store and analyze data in an integrated way.

To test the utility of the new device, they used it to analyze the electrocardiogram data and trained the device to classify ECGs into five categories, i.e., healthy or four types of abnormal signals. Dr. Wang added that more work is needed to test the power of the device in deducing patterns of health and disease. He stated that if the device could generate real-time information on blood pressure, then the device can systematically make decisions about when to adjust the patient′s blood pressure medications.
